Hey Wanderers!
It’s time to light up Calgary because Diwali is here! If you want to know more about one of the most radiant cultural celebrations this season, let’s talk Diwali—the Hindu “Festival of Lights.” Diwali is as big for Hindus as Christmas is for Christians, and it’s a beautiful blend of culture, light, and warmth.
What’s Diwali All About?
Diwali, or Deepavali, is an ancient festival that’s all about celebrating the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. This five-day celebration usually falls in October or November and is marked by lighting oil lamps called diyas, setting off fireworks, and sharing delicious sweets. Diwali brings people together, with everyone gathering to welcome positivity, health, and prosperity for the year ahead.
Why is Diwali So Special?
Diwali has deep roots in Hindu mythology. The festival occurs on a no-moon night. This festival commemorates the return of Rama and Sita to Ayodhya after his 14-year long exile. It is believed that to welcome them back, the residents of Ayodhya lit thousands of Diyas (clay lamps). That practice still continues. Beyond the myth, Diwali represents new beginnings, gratitude, and unity. It’s a time for families to come together, reflect on the year, and celebrate life’s blessings—much like Christmas in the Christian tradition!
How You Can Celebrate Diwali
In Calgary, Diwali is a joyful celebration filled with lights, colours, and flavours. Here’s how you can join in or simply enjoy the festive vibes around the city:
Lighting Up with Diyas & Sparklers
Lighting diyas is a must for Diwali, bringing brightness and positive vibes into every home. Though there are no formal fireworks shows we’re aware of, you’re able to buy sparklers at local stores.
Unfortunately, fireworks are not legal to light in Calgary without a permit and are subject to a fine.
Creating Rangoli
You might notice beautiful floor art called Rangoli outside homes and businesses. Made with colourful powders, rice, or flowers, these intricate designs are believed to welcome good luck and make a stunning photo backdrop!
Traditional Prayers & Worship
Many families gather to honour Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, by performing prayers and rituals to bless their homes. You can even find Diwali events in local temples, giving you a chance to learn about the spiritual roots of this festival.
Indulging in Sweets & Festive Food
Diwali is the ultimate time to treat yourself! From laddoos to gulab jamuns, traditional sweets are shared with friends, family, and neighbours. Try visiting local Indian restaurants and sweet shops offering Diwali treats!
Gifting & New Outfits
Much like Christmas, Diwali is a time for exchanging gifts and wearing new clothes. Many take this as an opportunity to start fresh, with new outfits symbolizing renewal and good fortune.
Community Events & Gatherings
Calgary hosts various community Diwali events with dance, music, food stalls, and workshops on Diwali customs. Head to spots like the Genesis Centre or the BAPS Mandir to experience the joy of Diwali first-hand.
