Traditionally, many stores and businesses close their doors to allow employees to spend time with loved ones. However, good news for you, if you’re looking for a place to dine or activities to enjoy, some restaurants, cafes, and attractions in Calgary remain open. From cozy brunch spots to family-friendly entertainment, there are still options to make your Christmas Day special, whether you're staying local or entertaining visitors.

  • Gyu-Kaku Japanese Restaurant

  • Brother’s taste of Asia

  • Bill’s Peking House

  • Clay Oven Indian Restaurant

  • Flower and Wolf (brunch & dinner menu)

  • Sage & Co. (dinner)

  • Grey Eagle Resort & Casino (lunch & dinner)

  • Fairmont Palliser (brunch)

  • Yellow Door Bistro (brunch & dinner buffet)

  • Thomson’s Kitchen & Bar

  • Carriage House Hotel (dinner buffet)

 

ENTERTAINMENT

  • The Rec Room: The Rec Room is offering special Christmas hours from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.

  • Cineplex/Landmark: Both Cineplex Theatres and Landmark Cinemas will have Christmas Day screenings.

  • Lion’s Festival of lights: One of the largest free lighting displays in Calgary.

 

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

  • Central Common Park Skating Rink: Enjoy the holiday magic by lacing up your skates at Central Common Park Skating Rink, perfect for a fun, festive outing with family and friends. Whether you're a seasoned skater or just starting out, it’s a great way to embrace the season and take in the beautiful winter scenery!

  • Public parks and pathways: Take in Calgary’s stunning winter landscape with your whole family by exploring the city's public parks and pathways.

  • Sunshine Village Ski Resort: Ski bunnies, rejoice! Sunshine Village Ski Resort will be open on Christmas Day with its annual Santa Rides for Charity event. The resort will have lifts running, along with some holiday surprises planned throughout the day. Skiers and riders who dress up in Christmas character attire (such as Santa, Mrs. Claus, Rudolph or the Grinch) can purchase a lift ticket for $88+gst, with money from the tickets sold going to The Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. Meet at the base of Strawberry Quad at 1 p.m. for the official start of the annual Santa Run.

  • Lake Louise Ski Resort: Known for having a wide variety of terrain great for all skill levels, The Lake Louise Ski Resort will be open on Christmas Day this year and you can ski with Santa Claus.

 

CALGARY TRANSIT

  • Sunday levels of service for buses and Ctrains are offered on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

 

COFFEE SHOPS

  • Starbucks: Many Starbucks locations across Calgary will be open on Christmas Day. Typically, at least one or two locations in each of the city’s districts will be open, so be sure to call the locations nearest to you before heading out!

  • Tim Hortons: CLOSED

 

MALLS

  • Malls across the city will be closed on Christmas Day, including Chinook Centre, The Core, Marlborough, Southcentre, Cross Iron Mills, and Market Mall. They will also be operating on limited hours on Christmas Eve.

 

LEISURE CENTRES & AMENETIES

  • City pools, skating rinks, and leisure centres like Southland Leisure Centre and Village Square will be CLOSED on Christmas Day.

  • Libraries: CLOSED

 

GAS STATIONS

Most gas stations are open on Christmas Day, including:

  • Esso

  • Petro Canada

  • Shell

  • 7-Eleven

 

GROCERY STORES

  • Plan ahead! This year, most grocery stores and their affiliated liquor shops will be CLOSED on Dec. 25
