Hey Wanderers,
Each year on November 11th, Canadians come together to honour the courage and sacrifices of the men and women who have served our country. In Calgary, there are many meaningful ways to observe Remembrance Day and pay tribute to our veterans.
Whether you're attending a ceremony, visiting the Field of Crosses, or simply pausing in silence, this guide provides all you need to know to commemorate this important day.
What is Remembrance Day?
Remembrance Day marks the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. It’s a day dedicated to remembering the sacrifices of Canadian soldiers in past and present conflicts. We take this time to reflect, remember, and show our gratitude for the freedoms we have today.
Why We Wear the Poppy
The tradition of wearing a poppy began after World War I, inspired by the famous poem In Flanders Fields by Canadian Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. The poppy has become a symbol of remembrance, a way to honor the losses endured, and to show support for veterans and their families. Wearing a poppy each November serves as a personal reminder of the costs of war and the bravery of those who served.
Field of Crosses: A Moving Tribute
Located along Memorial Drive, Calgary’s Field of Crosses is a powerful tribute featuring over 3,500 white crosses, each representing a fallen soldier from Southern Alberta.
Walking through this poignant display allows us to reflect on the individual lives that were lost and appreciate the magnitude of their sacrifice. Sunrise and sunset ceremonies are held here daily from November 1-10, providing opportunities for quiet remembrance and reflection.
Please come 15 minutes before sunrise or sunset.
Pause, Remember, and Reflect
Remembrance Day is about honouring those who have served and sacrificed for our freedom.
At 11 AM on November 11th, Canadians observe two minutes of silence to reflect on the bravery of our veterans and to show gratitude. This small gesture unites us all in remembrance, serving as a moment of respect and recognition.
